01 · OVERVIEW

Thailand at a glance

Explore the country’s education and travel options with a clear understanding of language, cost, location and immigration requirements.

Country context

Thailand has a mix of public universities, specialist institutions and international colleges. English-language degrees are concentrated in selected international programmes, so applicants should verify the exact course language, campus, recognition and entry criteria.

Compare cities and seasons before selecting a university or travel route. Requirements and practical conditions can differ by region.

Academic pathways in Thailand

Shortlist by programme fit, language, total cost, recognition and student support—not reputation alone.

Study options

International programmes are available in selected fields at universities in Bangkok and other major student cities. Check the programme’s language of instruction, prerequisites, tuition, clinical or professional recognition and whether international applicants are accepted for the intended intake.

  • Undergraduate: secondary-school completion and course prerequisites.
  • Postgraduate: relevant recognised bachelor’s degree; some courses require work experience.
  • Doctoral: research fit, proposal and supervisor availability.
  • Language: accepted test or local-language evidence where required.

Application checklist

  • Valid passport and application form.
  • Academic certificates and transcripts.
  • Language test or accepted medium-of-instruction evidence.
  • Statement of purpose, CV and references where required.
  • Portfolio, research proposal or interview for selected programmes.
  • Financial, medical and translated documents where requested.

Tuition & living costs

Fees differ by course, campus and student status. Obtain a current written fee breakdown including deposits, insurance, registration, examination and laboratory charges. Compare residence halls and private housing, utilities, meals and commute.

Scholarships

Thai universities offer institution-specific merit awards and selected government or bilateral scholarships. Funding conditions differ by degree, nationality and intake; verify whether tuition, accommodation and living allowances are covered, and whether the award is renewable. Do not treat a scholarship as automatic with admission.

Check the official annual call for nationality eligibility, deadlines, required documents, coverage and renewal conditions. Admission does not guarantee funding.

Student visa & admission

Degree students should obtain the Non-Immigrant ED visa before travel, following the Thai institution’s admission and supporting-document process. The Thai Embassy in New Delhi lists the ED category for study and publishes the current application route and fee. Visa validity and permitted stay are not the same thing; follow the visa and immigration stamp conditions and complete any required reporting or extensions.

04 · TOURISM

Plan a visit to Thailand

Thailand combines major-city culture, temples, food, beaches and island travel. The best route depends on whether you want the Andaman coast, Gulf islands or northern Thailand.

Season, flights & transport

November to February is generally cooler and drier in much of the country, though coast seasons differ: check local conditions for Phuket/Krabi and Koh Samui before choosing dates. Direct flights connect India with Bangkok and selected leisure gateways; schedules vary by departure city and season. Bangkok has BTS Skytrain, MRT, airport rail, buses and taxis. Use licensed taxis or reputable ride-hailing; domestic flights, trains and coaches connect regions.

Tourist visa for Indian passport holders

The Royal Thai Embassy in New Delhi states that a 30-day visa exemption for Indian ordinary passport holders for tourism and short-term business took effect on 15 September 2026 and remains effective until further announcement. This replaced the earlier 60-day arrangement. The exemption is for tourism/short-term business, not study or employment. Travellers should also complete the Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) online within 3 days before arrival; it replaces the former paper TM6 arrival form. Carry evidence of onward travel and sufficient funds, and check the current entry conditions with the airline and Thai authorities before departure.

Hotels & indicative budget

Indicative daily budget per person: around ฿900–1,800 for a shoestring stay in Chiang Mai or simpler regional destinations; ฿1,100–2,200 in Bangkok; and ฿1,600–2,800 in Phuket for a budget style. A comfortable mid-range day may be around ฿2,200–5,500 in Bangkok or Chiang Mai and ฿4,000–7,000 in Phuket, including accommodation, meals, local transport and ordinary activities. Island boat trips, resort stays and private transfers add substantially.

Hostel dorms and simple guesthouses may start around ฿600–1,200 per night in lower-cost areas, while budget private rooms often fall around ฿1,000–2,000; beach districts and peak dates can be much higher. Reference: 2026 Thailand daily budget by destination ↗ Treat these as working ranges and compare live room rates for your exact dates.

Attractions & entry costs

Temples, national parks, viewpoints, island tours and theme attractions may have separate foreign-visitor prices, conservation fees or boat charges. Check the official operator or park authority for current entry prices, opening hours, closures and weather restrictions before visiting.

Current entry and study-permit checks

Official-source check for planning purposes. Reconfirm the rules for the traveller’s nationality, exact purpose and intended travel date before payment or departure.

Thailand: Indian visitor exemption changed in September 2026. The Royal Thai Embassy in New Delhi confirms that the 30-day visa-exemption arrangement for Indian ordinary passport holders visiting for tourism and short-term business took effect on 15 September 2026 and remains effective until further announcement. Do not continue using older 60-day guidance. This exemption is not a study or employment permission. All travellers must complete the Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) within the prescribed pre-arrival period (the Thai authorities recommend submitting it up to three days before arrival). Check the Embassy’s current notice before each trip, as entry schemes can be revised.
