01 · COUNTRY OVERVIEW

South Korea at a glance

South Korea offers distinct education, career and travel possibilities. The best city and pathway depend on the subject, language, budget, season and personal circumstances.

Understanding the destination

South Korea combines research-intensive universities with applied and specialist institutions. English-medium courses are more common at graduate level and selected international colleges; many undergraduate degrees require Korean proficiency. Check the actual department-level language and TOPIK requirements.

Seoul’s palaces and neighbourhoods, Busan’s beaches and markets, Jeju’s volcanic landscapes, Gyeongju’s heritage and Korea’s food, design and pop-culture scenes offer varied itineraries.

Programmes & tuition

Tuition varies by institution, level, discipline and campus. The Korean government’s published national averages for degree programmes are approximately ₩6.82 million per year for undergraduate study and ₩4.22 million for graduate study. The reported undergraduate average is lower at national/public universities (about ₩4.27 million) than at private universities (about ₩7.63 million). These are national averages, not quotations for a particular course; medicine, arts, laboratory and specialist programmes may cost more.

  • Request the current fee schedule for the exact course and intake.
  • Check application, registration, examination, insurance and laboratory charges.
  • Ask whether fees are annual, semester-based or total-programme amounts.
  • Confirm refund, deposit and deferral policies in writing.

Scholarships & funding

The Global Korea Scholarship (GKS) is a major government-funded route with separate undergraduate and graduate calls and embassy/university tracks. The 2027 undergraduate GKS call was published in September 2026; applicants should use the current guideline, eligible-university list and deadline for their track. Universities may also offer tuition reductions based on academic performance, language scores or department nomination.

  • Check nationality and programme eligibility.
  • Confirm whether a separate scholarship application is needed.
  • Review renewal grades, attendance and duration conditions.
  • Calculate the funding gap after living costs and uncovered fees.
05 · STUDENT VISA & ADMISSION

From application to arrival

Immigration decisions are made by the relevant authorities. The university and visa route must be confirmed before paying deposits or booking travel.

Student immigration overview

International students need the appropriate status for their course: D-2 for degree programmes (associate, bachelor’s, master’s, doctoral and exchange) and D-4 for qualifying non-degree training such as Korean-language study. Applicants generally need the university’s standard admission letter, passport, photograph, education evidence and proof of financial ability; additional documents, including a TB test where applicable, may be required. Apply through the Korean diplomatic mission responsible for your Indian residence and follow its current KVAC/VFS submission procedure.

STEP 01

Profile review

Assess academic records, subject prerequisites, language, budget and intended intake.

STEP 02

Shortlist

Compare official programme pages, tuition, recognition and scholarship conditions.

STEP 03

Apply

Prepare certified documents, submit the application and complete interviews or tests.

STEP 04

Visa & enrolment

Follow the institution's immigration instructions and complete pre-departure checks.

Typical document checklist

  • Valid passport and application form
  • Academic certificates and transcripts
  • Language test or medium-of-instruction evidence, if accepted
  • Statement of purpose / study plan and CV where required
  • Recommendation letters, portfolio or research proposal where relevant
  • Financial evidence, medical/insurance documents and translations as required

Accommodation & living costs

The official Study in Korea portal gives a broad monthly living-cost estimate of around ₩750,000–₩1,000,000. Its guidance lists housing at roughly ₩500,000–₩700,000 per month, with dormitory fees varying by room occupancy and meal plan. Build a personal budget around the actual city, housing deposit, utilities, food, transport, insurance, phone and study materials; Seoul private housing can push costs higher.

Part-time work rights are not a substitute for proof of funds. Check the exact legal limits and permission requirements for your visa category.

06 · TOURISM & TRAVEL

Explore South Korea beyond the classroom

Seoul’s palaces and neighbourhoods, Busan’s beaches and markets, Jeju’s volcanic landscapes, Gyeongju’s heritage and Korea’s food, design and pop-culture scenes offer varied itineraries.

Best time to visit

Spring (April–May) and autumn (September–November) are popular for comfortable weather. Summer can be hot, humid and rainy; winter is cold, especially inland.

Flights from India

Direct flights operate from major Indian gateways to Seoul on selected airlines; one-stop connections may widen options. Check current schedules and entry airport before purchasing.

Getting around

Seoul and other major cities have extensive metro and bus networks. A rechargeable T-money or compatible transit card is useful for local journeys; intercity rail, including KTX, connects major destinations. Check the correct rail station, seat reservations and luggage arrangements before travelling, and allow extra time for transfers.

Visitor visa for Indian passport holders

Indian ordinary passport holders generally need the appropriate Korean visitor visa before travelling for tourism. Do not assume K-ETA is a substitute where a visa is required. Confirm the current visa category, checklist and submission route with the Korean Visa Portal and the Korean mission responsible for your state of residence. In India, jurisdiction is divided between the Embassy in New Delhi and the Consulates in Mumbai and Chennai.

Hotels & accommodation

Choose accommodation by neighbourhood and transport access, not only nightly price. Compare cancellation terms, taxes, breakfast, airport transfer, family-room configuration and late check-in. In peak periods, reserve refundable options early.

Use official attraction websites or authorised ticket sellers for current admission prices, timed-entry reservations and closure notices. Budget for local transit, intercity travel, airport transfers and guided excursions separately. Keep digital and offline copies of tickets and accommodation details.

Indicative travel budget

Indicative daily spend: a Seoul backpacker-style day may be planned around ₩60,000–90,000 per person, a comfortable mid-range day around ₩120,000–180,000, and a higher-comfort day around ₩220,000–300,000, including accommodation, food, city transport and ordinary sightseeing. Busan and some regional cities can be less expensive; Jeju may cost more when car hire or tours are needed.

For travellers departing India, a 5–7 day mid-range trip has been estimated at approximately ₹1.3–2.2 lakh per person including return flights, visa and on-ground costs. This is a broad trip-planning estimate, not a fixed package price. Reference: 2026 South Korea trip-cost guide for Indian travellers ↗

Current entry and study-permit checks

Official-source check for planning purposes. Reconfirm the rules for the traveller’s nationality, exact purpose and intended travel date before payment or departure.

Korea: match the visa to the purpose of travel. Indian citizens generally need the appropriate Korean visa for tourism; K-ETA should not be described as a substitute for a visa where a visa is required. Use the Korean mission/Visa Portal checklist for the applicant’s jurisdiction and trip. For study, D-2 is the principal category for degree-level study and D-4 covers qualifying non-degree training. Part-time work is not automatic: students must meet the applicable eligibility, language and immigration-permission requirements before working. Verify the current limits for the exact visa subtype and institution.

Programme and university verification: use these official sources to filter actual courses, confirm international entry routes, and check fees for the intake:

Tuition and student-living costs: Costs vary by institution, programme, campus, intake, nationality, scholarship conditions and accommodation choice. Use the official fee schedules linked here to check the exact course and intake. Public guidance should not be treated as a fixed quotation; detailed comparisons and individual budget planning are handled through the destination brochure and counsellor discussion.
