Best season, flights & transport
Moscow and Saint Petersburg are most comfortable for many first-time visitors from late spring to early autumn; winter offers snow and seasonal atmosphere but requires warm clothing and careful planning. Regional destinations such as Lake Baikal have very different seasonal access. Direct and connecting flight options from India can change quickly, so compare the full route, transit-country visa rules, baggage and arrival airport before purchase. Use licensed local transport and check current rail schedules for intercity journeys.
Tourist visa for Indian passport holders
Indian ordinary passport holders are included in Russia’s unified electronic-visa eligibility list. The e-visa is single-entry, valid for 120 days from issue, and permits a stay of up to 30 days from entry. Applications are submitted online no earlier than 86 days and no later than 4 days before arrival; official processing is stated as up to 4 calendar days. Entry and exit must use an authorised border checkpoint, and travel medical insurance is required. Check the current eligible-country and checkpoint lists before relying on this route.
For longer stays, multiple entries, study, work or any purpose outside the e-visa scope, use the appropriate regular visa route. A tourist e-visa is not a student visa.
Travel planning: compare current airline routings and transit-visa requirements, check your insurer’s Russia coverage, and confirm how you will pay for accommodation and local services before departure.
Hotels & budgets
As a broad reference, Moscow and Saint Petersburg budget travellers may plan around €25–40 per person per day, while a mid-range trip may be closer to €70–120, excluding international flights and depending heavily on hotel choice and sightseeing. A mid-range hotel room in central areas can cost considerably more during holidays and peak dates. Compare neighbourhood, transit access, taxes, breakfast and cancellation terms. These figures are broad planning estimates rather than bookable rates.
Important practical consideration: international card acceptance and cross-border payment services can be restricted. Before departure, verify how you will pay for accommodation, transport and emergencies, review your insurer’s exclusions and current government travel advice, and do not assume that a foreign bank card or mobile payment app will work.
India-specific safety note: The Indian Embassy has reiterated Government of India's warning to Indian nationals about misleading or unverified overseas job offers connected with recruitment into the Russian armed forces. This is separate from ordinary university admission and tourism. Do not travel for a job or sign any employment/recruitment arrangement without independently verifying the employer, visa category and legal terms through official Indian channels. Check the latest advisory before departure.
