01 · COUNTRY OVERVIEW

Malaysia at a glance

Malaysia offers distinct education, career and travel possibilities. The best city and pathway depend on the subject, language, budget, season and personal circumstances.

Understanding the destination

Malaysia combines public universities, private institutions and international branch campuses. English-medium programmes are common in many private institutions and selected public-university courses. Compare the Malaysian Qualifications Agency status, awarding body, campus, internship arrangements and full international-student fee schedule.

Malaysia offers Kuala Lumpur’s city attractions, Penang’s heritage and food, Langkawi’s islands, Malacca’s history and Borneo’s rainforests and wildlife.

Programmes & tuition

Tuition varies by institution, level, discipline, language, campus and student nationality. Medicine, laboratory-based courses, business schools and private institutions may have substantially different fee structures.

  • Request the current fee schedule for the exact course and intake.
  • Check application, registration, examination, insurance and laboratory charges.
  • Ask whether fees are annual, semester-based or total-programme amounts.
  • Confirm refund, deposit and deferral policies in writing.

Scholarships & funding

Scholarship options include university merit awards, tuition reductions and selected government or external sponsorships. Some private-university awards are partial and may apply only to first-year tuition or have grade-maintenance and refund conditions. Obtain the current written terms.

  • Check nationality and programme eligibility.
  • Confirm whether a separate scholarship application is needed.
  • Review renewal grades, attendance and duration conditions.
  • Calculate the funding gap after living costs and uncovered fees.
05 · STUDENT VISA & ADMISSION

From application to arrival

Immigration decisions are made by the relevant authorities. The university and visa route must be confirmed before paying deposits or booking travel.

Student immigration overview

International students must secure the appropriate Student Pass before commencing full-time study. For most higher-education applicants, the university submits the student-pass application through Education Malaysia Global Services (EMGS). The process can involve an eVAL (Visa Approval Letter), a Single-Entry Visa for nationalities that require one, medical screening and post-arrival endorsement. Requirements vary by nationality and institution; follow the university’s current checklist and do not travel for study until the required approvals are in place.

STEP 01

Profile review

Assess academic records, subject prerequisites, language, budget and intended intake.

STEP 02

Shortlist

Compare official programme pages, tuition, recognition and scholarship conditions.

STEP 03

Apply

Prepare certified documents, submit the application and complete interviews or tests.

STEP 04

Visa & enrolment

Follow the institution's immigration instructions and complete pre-departure checks.

Typical document checklist

  • Valid passport and application form
  • Academic certificates and transcripts
  • Language test or medium-of-instruction evidence, if accepted
  • Statement of purpose / study plan and CV where required
  • Recommendation letters, portfolio or research proposal where relevant
  • Financial evidence, medical/insurance documents and translations as required

Accommodation & living costs

Compare university residences, private student housing, shared apartments and homestays. Ask about deposits, utilities, meal plans, commute times and contract length. Living-cost estimates should be built city by city and include insurance, local transport, phone, study materials and emergency funds.

Part-time work rights are not a substitute for proof of funds. Check the exact legal limits and permission requirements for your visa category.

06 · TOURISM & TRAVEL

Explore Malaysia beyond the classroom

Malaysia offers Kuala Lumpur’s city attractions, Penang’s heritage and food, Langkawi’s islands, Malacca’s history and Borneo’s rainforests and wildlife.

Best time to visit

Malaysia is tropical year-round. Monsoon timing differs between the east and west coasts; choose beach destinations around local seasonal weather, not a single nationwide season.

Flights from India

Direct flights connect Indian cities with Kuala Lumpur and selected regional airports. Low-cost and full-service carriers operate on different routes; check baggage, terminal and onward-transfer arrangements.

Getting around

Kuala Lumpur has rail, metro/LRT/MRT, buses and taxis. Intercity coaches and domestic flights connect the peninsula and East Malaysia; island transfers may need ferries.

Tourist visa for Indian passport holders

For Indian ordinary passport holders: Malaysia’s Immigration Department currently lists a visa exemption through 31 December 2026. This is a time-limited policy, not a permanent visa-free arrangement; check the official notice again before travel and confirm the permitted stay and entry conditions for your trip.

Most foreign visitors who are not in an exempt category must submit the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC) within the official pre-arrival period (normally three days before arrival). Check whether your nationality or travel category is exempt. Carry evidence of onward/return travel, accommodation and sufficient funds if requested by immigration officers.

Hotels & accommodation

Choose accommodation by neighbourhood and transport access, not only nightly price. Compare cancellation terms, taxes, breakfast, airport transfer, family-room configuration and late check-in. In peak periods, reserve refundable options early.

Transport, tickets & entry fees

Use official attraction websites or authorised ticket sellers for current admission prices, timed-entry reservations and closure notices. Budget for local transit, intercity travel, airport transfers and guided excursions separately. Keep digital and offline copies of tickets and accommodation details.

Indicative travel budget

Student living-cost planning: an earlier researcher estimate placed a modest student budget around RM1,450–3,000 per month, with accommodation, food, transport, phone and personal expenses making up the main items. Treat this as a broad starting range only: Kuala Lumpur, campus housing, private rentals and personal lifestyle can change the total considerably. Ask the institution for its current accommodation options and build a monthly budget before accepting an offer.

Tourist accommodation and daily spend: as a rough planning guide, hostel dorm beds may be around RM40–80 per night, budget guesthouse double rooms around RM80–140, and many mid-range double rooms around RM150–350. For food, local transport and modest sightseeing, allow roughly RM100–220 per person per day before accommodation; island transfers, paid excursions and resort areas can raise this. These are indicative market ranges, not live quotes. Compare the exact dates, taxes, location and cancellation terms before booking. Reference: Malaysia travel-cost guide ↗

Current entry and study-permit checks

Official-source check for planning purposes. Reconfirm the rules for the traveller’s nationality, exact purpose and intended travel date before payment or departure.

Malaysia: temporary visitor waiver and student pass must not be confused. For Indian ordinary passport holders, the published visa-waiver arrangement currently runs through 31 December 2026 for visits of up to 30 days, subject to entry conditions. The Malaysian mission lists a passport valid for at least six months, confirmed return flight, confirmed hotel booking and online Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC) submission three days before arrival. This is a time-limited visitor arrangement, not a student visa. Student Pass applicants must be outside Malaysia when the application is submitted; the institution/EMGS and Immigration process the approval before travel, followed by the required post-arrival medical examination and pass endorsement. A tourist visit should not be presented as a route to convert status after arrival.

Programme and university verification: use these official sources to filter actual courses, confirm international entry routes, and check fees for the intake:

Tuition and student-living costs: Costs vary by institution, programme, campus, intake, nationality, scholarship conditions and accommodation choice. Use the official fee schedules linked here to check the exact course and intake. Public guidance should not be treated as a fixed quotation; detailed comparisons and individual budget planning are handled through the destination brochure and counsellor discussion.
